RV SAFETY
The safety aspect of RV Elec. AC power distribution is the most important, and the first section you should read on this website !
Recreational Vehicles sold in Canada must be built to either the CSA Z240 RV Series Standard or the RVIA NFPA 1192 Standard .
( see the resources page).
(Also Propane Distribution is another subject but not covered here).
A Hotskin ( stray voltage) situation can kill you or a member of your family, This is why I strongly suggest to TEST the
RV Park pedestal BEFORE you hook-up.
Hotskin is when voltage potential is on the RV frame, and metal surface and is not
making contact to pedestal ground as it should.
This is where you may touch the RV metal door and get shocked, specially on wet ground surface.
In the US 21% of RVers have reported that they got shocked !
It only takes 30mA through your body to get your heart go into fibrillation !
See basic principles with MIke Holt on Elec. shocks:
This is not a joke !
This is due to RV internal wiring fault, incorrect wiring, or pedestal reversed polarity or an open ground.
A good reading on this subject is <RV Electrical Safety> by Mike Sokol. (available on Amazon)
This is where an EMS (Elec. Management System ) is strongly suggested.
( ie: Surge Guard 34950/34951, or Progressive- EMS-PT30X )
Too many times DIY RVers, even electricians have made that BIG MISTAKE of wiring a pedestal TT-30R outlet to reverse
polarity or to 240V ! This situation is often reported also for RV outlets and pedestal installed at home by the owner himself.
ALL new RV’s are wired as per NFPA 1192 with NFPA-70 (NEC) and are safe.
The problem may not be the RV internal wiring but the Power outlet in RV Parks, or the RV is NOT GROUNDED to the pedestal.
Also many DIY RVers are adding new systems, new power outlets, battery chargers/converters, inverters, Connectivity
systems etc and are not playing by the rules and standards !

or see the Documents page.
WARNING:
DO NOT MAKE ANY REPAIR OR WIRING CHANGE ON YOUR RV IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH AC POWER !
Get a qualified electrician !
A mistake will damage your equipment, your RV may end-up to be hotskin, in smoke or may kill you !.
WIRING SAFETY:
Electricity can be dangerous.
It can cause harm to persons or property. It takes a remarkably small amount of current across the human heart to stop it. Due to the natural resistance of the human skin and tissue (in dry conditions) this means that a high voltage is required to generate this heart-stopping current.
But humans have died at as low as 42 Volt. Both DC and AC can cause this fatal occurrence.
Electrical work should therefore always be carried out by a qualified electrician or technician and the local safety guidelines and requirements need to be adhered to.
IMPORTANT:
• AC and DC voltages are dangerous and harmful.
• Always use insulated tools when working with electricity and batteries.
• Do not short circuit batteries this can cause fire or explosion.
• Battery charging can create explosive and toxic gasses. for Led Acid batteries ventilation is required.
• Undersized wiring or bad electrical contact can cause fire.
• ALLWAYS select correct fuses and breakers for the wiring size.
• Before starting a DIY project, get educated, and get the consulting ! its YOUR responsibility !
• NEVER assume the dealer is correct ! get the facts !
